When You Left..

When You Left

Everything had happened within two weeks, and her life had completely changed. It wasn't easy for Ecem to come to terms with her mother's death. She didn't know what to do. Her empty, blank stares worried her loved ones. Except for essential needs, she didn't speak to anyone. Until two weeks ago, she could have said many meaningful words about death and accepting it. But this time, the fire burned where it fell. Living wasn't easy at all. The absence of her mother felt unbearably heavy. She felt utterly alone in the big city.

Her mother had suddenly fallen ill within two weeks and was taken to the intensive care unit. While hoping to see her face, she was shaken by the devastating news of her beloved mother, and they handed her a bag with a few of her mother's belongings.

Life is a thin line between death and living. People live on this thin line with endless desires, as if they will never die.

Humans are so heedless...

Humans are so powerless...

It felt like a dream, she wished it were so, but it was real. Now she was preparing her mother for her final journey.

She had been to that cemetery before. She had witnessed many sorrows and farewells before...

Journeys with no return...

But it had never felt this heavy; she had to face death for the first time.

Her phone wouldn't ring every morning anymore. She wouldn't rush to Sunday breakfasts. They wouldn't make plans to go to the village in the summer. They wouldn't prepare together for winter. Moreover, she would never see her mother again, never hug and smell her again. How would she ever go back to that house...

Mother meant home...

People are so forgetful...

But life reminds us of the forgotten truth.

Piercing through to the marrow...

Months had passed, and despite the longing she felt, the pain in her heart had eased a little.

She had plenty of time to think and ponder. Death had no age. While it seemed far away, it could happen to her at any moment.

She thought about her mother and the beautiful and righteous things she had taught her.

"You must have a purpose, you must benefit others," she would say. She was grateful to have a mother who taught both with her presence and absence. What a beautiful gift, what a beautiful legacy she had left. "I didn't appreciate it enough," she said, shaking her head.

"Yes, I must have a purpose," she said confidently. She asked herself how she wanted to live her life and what kind of mark she wanted to leave. She wanted to live a meaningful life. She should live life rightly and be beneficial to people. She should pursue the right things without being a prisoner to her momentary whims and emotions...
