People are often bid farewell with the words, "Güle güle!"
"Go happily…"
But why is it so?
What does it mean for someone to "go happily"?
A person who leaves with a smile conveys satisfaction with the effort and care extended to them. A smile is the visible expression of gratitude. Humans, as social beings, are deeply pleased when their efforts are appreciated. This pleasure motivates them to do even better. Thus, life seems to promise those who leave happily even better memories to cherish.
A person who departs with joy brings happiness to where they are headed. Aren’t those who brighten their surroundings with joy the ones we seek most? People naturally gravitate toward those who smile and make others smile. After all, who among us can endure a perpetually grumpy or disagreeable person for long?
The virtues of being able to smile and spread happiness are countless. It soothes the nerves of an anxious young person starting a new job. It helps warm the heart of someone you’ve just met. A welcoming smile to a guest is evidence of your delight in seeing them.
A smile is one of the finest accessories a person can wear. Yet, when attending an event, people often focus on wearing their best clothes. Days are spent deciding on a hairstyle, and trips are made to distant hair salons. Clothes are ordered from another city because the local options don’t appeal. But they forget to wear that one accessory that could have the greatest impact—a smile.
Consider this: Someone spends an entire day cleaning their home from top to bottom for their guests, prepares a variety of dishes, but their fatigue robs them of their smile. How much of the effort loses its value when a smile is absent?
So, how can one remain cheerful? With the challenges each of us face in life, is it even possible? Inevitably, we find ourselves asking, "How do children in war-torn cities, who face daily bombings, still manage to smile?"
Many fail to fully grasp the blessings life offers them, but those who smile live in the essence of what they have. They either appreciate the value of what they possess or bring value to it. When we do good for others, our faces naturally light up. Accomplishing much with little brings us a sense of pride. We smile in response to a gesture of kindness, and we smile when we are the ones giving.
It’s often not what we own that makes us smile but the connection we share with those around us. A smiling face is a reflection of gratitude and acknowledgment. Moreover, your smile is a gift to your surroundings—a small act of generosity. A smile is like the sun, nourishing and sustaining all it touches.
