Every Birth Has a Death

Does One Never Think?
Every birth comes with a death—
Does one never think of this?
That what we cling to as eternal is only temporary,
That every beginning has an end,
And every end is also a new beginning...

Then why rejoice so much at beginnings?
Why grieve so deeply at endings?
When every birth is proof that a death will follow,
Why do we assign so much meaning to being born?

Does one never think?
That just like the things they step on to get ahead,
They too can be stepped on...
That each passing day might one day demand accountability...

Does one never think?
That beyond the work, the spouse, the child,
Beyond even the mother and father they hold dear—
There is One even closer.
And without holding onto Him, there is no salvation…

Does one never think?
That their time too will come to an end,
That all they fought and strained for cannot be taken with them,
That the things they embraced as eternal will fade into nothingness...
Why then put so much effort into what is fleeting?
When the finiteness of all things is so painfully obvious—
Why the greed for possessions, professions, titles, and excess?
When the final breath comes knocking one day—
Does one never think
How bitter a regret it will be
To realize it’s too late?
