Silent Gratitudes

Silent Gratitudes

We often say, “Let’s be grateful.”
But… what is gratitude?
It’s a word that rolls off our tongues so easily, but do we truly know what it means?
You know that game show where they say, “We asked 100 people and here’s what they said…”
What if we asked 100 people: What does gratitude mean to you?
Or even simpler: What are you grateful for?
We might hear answers like:
Graduating from school,
Passing an important exam,
Getting married,
Holding our healthy baby for the first time,
Landing a job,
Getting promoted,
Surviving a plane ride,
Buying a house,
Getting a car,
Escaping an earthquake,
Surviving a fire,
Recovering from illness…
The list could go on.

But must it always be something big to deserve our gratitude?
Do we have to think “big” in order to appreciate the “small”?
Or could it be that the so-called “small” things are, in fact, the greatest reasons to be grateful?
Is waking up each morning really a small thing?
Or even just being able to fall asleep the night before?
There are people who go days without sleep, their bodies and minds unraveling...
What’s the bigger miracle—taking a breath or buying a house?
Could we even buy a house if we didn’t have that breath in the first place?
Sadly, it often takes illness for a person to realize they should have been grateful for their healthy body.
Yet, what a miraculous system we’ve been given…
The fact that a wound can heal on its own—isn’t that an enormous reason to be thankful?
And how every human body does this, according to age and health, at its own miraculous pace...
The moment danger strikes, alarms sound in the body: “Seal that wound!”
Yet with a single flick of a fingernail, we can peel off its scab too.
And our hands, our fingers—our personal toolbox...
Our mind—designed to create benefit...
Reflexes that instantly pull our hand away from heat beyond what we can bear…
And what about our emotions—the chocolate spread of life?
If we didn’t love our spouses or children, how could we stay with them simply to meet needs?

Let’s not forget the joy in life when we talk about gratitude.
A flower not only offers benefit, but beauty and joy to the heart and eyes.
The colorful fish, the dancing waves, a sunrise or sunset, the soft drizzle of rain, the scent of pine on a mountain trail…
Being able to leave home for work each day…
And return again in the evening to our families…
Sitting together over tea, sharing popcorn…
These are blessings that could disappear in an instant.
We offer thanks after long journeys—
But what about those short bus or taxi rides? Are they not worth a quiet thank you too?
What I’m trying to say is:
There is gratitude…
And then there is deep, silent gratitude.
So… are we really thankful enough?

  1. This century is our blessing in a mean time is a curse. We have plenty of opportunities and options in our life. Such as plenty of education tools however without knowing what we need we tend to forget what we are grateful for in our life. I am wishing us to see ourselves in the mirror…
